Lijepo sam uskočio u povorku i prošao dvoranu lakoćom do dijela za The Old Republic. Cosplay je očito jako popularan ali najbolje su naravno bile cosplay djevojke, možda taj Gamescom i nije za maloljetne, he he. Nagradu za najveću provokaciju dobiva štand za igru World of Tanks.

Definitivno nezaboravno iskustvo!

Some of us visited Gamescom 2011, and one of our members – 7h30n, wrote a nice story about the trip:

Croatian ESL in collaboration with Slovenian ESL has organized a visit to Cologne and one of the most well-known video game industry expos – GamesCom.

The trip officially started around 4 PM in Ljubljana. Before we started moving, Red Bull girl representatives helped us to get on our way. We arrived in Salzburg in the evening and visited the famous Red Bull Hangar. Although it was dark already the atmosphere was even more glaring from the reflections on various aircraft and formulas. I was surprised to find a real life sized model of a Predator next to all those fast transportation machines. The apparent wealth of Red Bull could even be seen in bathrooms where you have finely made one-use towels for wiping your hands instead of regular paper ones. In order to satisfy our thirst and hunger we went to the nearest brewery. Their wheat beer is very good but the beer from Munich is the real deal (I’ll tell you of those later)! What always surprises me in Austria and Germany is the lack of real receipt when paying in restaurants, bars or breweries. You can never be sure if the waiter is being dishonest but on the other hand you can feel the old-time atmosphere even stronger. We continued our trip to Cologne with filled tummies and sleepy heads. Although the bus that drove us was very good and comfortable I couldn’t get much sleep and by the looks of it I wasn’t the only one.

We arrived to Cologne in the early morning. Everyone was still sleeping and there was nobody on the streets preventing our efforts of finding the right way in narrow streets labyrinth. Our accommodation was a Hostel in the centre of Cologne, and no we haven’t experienced any chainsaw massacres that accompany hostels… While the paperwork was getting sorted out we had time for breakfast. I wasn’t very impressed by the food but as a great tea lover I was more than impressed with the offering of various teas. After the breakfast, our tour guide showed us some important locations on the city map and lead us on the underground. The underground transportation also goes above the ground and for extra confusion when exiting there are doors on both sides of the train. Some of you may know that in Zagreb we have trams and you can see on displays when will one arrive, unfortunately that is completely unreliable. On the other hand in Cologne you can expect the underground to arrive on time or sooner but it doesn’t leave the station until scheduled which is more than excellent! The expo ticket also covers public transportation through the days of expo so we had no worries with getting kicked out of the underground. The next thing that surprised me in a good way was that people actually speak another language (in this case English) beside their mother tongue and I find my English a lot easier than German.

Early in the morning we have entered the premises of the GamesCom and there are already quite a lot of people and the number increases by the second. Ingeniously the Blizzard and Activision had to have their sections together in the same hall thus making it so filled with people you couldn’t walk through it at all. Suddenly, a giant Yeti from Star Wars appeared accompanied by Stormtroopers! I nicely jumped behind the patrol and easily got to the The Old Republic section, it was super effective! Cosplay is obviously very popular but naturally the cosplay girls were the most popular, perhaps this so called GamesCom isn’t just for kids, heh heh. The award for the most provocative marketing cosplay goes out to World of Tanks. I had and still have no clue what kind of game that is but they had a stage with pole dancers and nothing else or nothing else that could my eye be drawn to. Beside the games and cosplay competitions there was also held an e-sports competition – the Intel Extreme Masters finals. I closely watched in my opinion very interesting Starcraft 2 matches and not so interesting League of Legends, I find LoL much more interesting to play than to watch. It was also possible to take photos and talk with professional players if one so desired. As I walked through the whole expo I made a mental checklist of points of interest for the next day to get there as soon as possible because my legs were already hurting. In the late hours we used our VIP passes to get into the party for professional gamers and hosts. The music was excellent at first but unfortunately as time passed by DJ couldn’t keep up.

Next morning, immediately after breakfast I took of to the expo so I could be the first in the line for Diablo 3. It seems I wasn’t the only one with this simple plan…After 3 hours of waiting I was indeed the first in the line but the waiting was worth it because the gameplay was great. As time passes by people get hungry so the expo was filled with fast food and regular restaurant to suit every taste. Another long day was coming to an end and we began to prepare for our departure. After a nice sleep in the Hostel we began made our way to Munich. It seems that in Germany people not only do not work before 10 AM they also don’t work on Mondays so we couldn’t visit the BMW factory. Fortunately, we were welcomed into the BMW Welt where we could feast our eyes on various shiny cars representing the whole history of BMW. The next landmark of Munich we visited was Olympiapark and Olympic Tower with its Rock Museum. The Tower is circa 300 meters tall and you get to the top with an elevator in 10 seconds. The ride to the top is quite exhilarating because you feel the change of forces all over your body. From the Tower there is a beautiful gaze at Munich and BMW industry complex marked by their logo. As we finished sightseeing Munich we started to prepare for our return to Croatia. Naturally, we couldn’t leave Munich before tasting their well known beer. The brewery of choice was the well known one: Hofbräuhaus. The interior was decorated with wood and that true brewery atmosphere was spiced up by waitresses in Tirol dresses handing out beers in litres. Food was very well served but the beer definitely deserves a special mention. Each type of beer is served in special beer glasses or mugs and it’s all accompanied with the right temperature of both beer and glasses. Looks can be deceiving but the real quality is in the beer itself and I have yet to try a better beer than the one I was served there. Our trip came to a conclusion but it will remain an unforgettable experience!
